Responsible gambling: tools, boundaries and help
Gambling is addictive. That is not a legal formula bolted onto the end of a page — it is the premise of this one. What follows covers the tools that work before a problem exists, and where to find help in Poland once one does. It also states honestly the difference between a Polish-licensed operator and a foreign one, because in this particular area that difference matters.
The principle everything rests on
Gambling is entertainment you pay for, not a way to earn. The house edge is a mathematical property of the games and no strategy, hour of day or system removes it. The consequence is simple: the amount you deposit should be an amount you can lose entirely without affecting bills, savings or relationships. If that is not true, no tool on this page will work.
Tools inside the account panel
| Tool | How it works | When to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | A daily, weekly or monthly ceiling on payments in | Before the first deposit |
| Loss limit | A maximum net loss per settlement period | Alongside the deposit limit |
| Session limit | A session length after which you are logged out | Before the first long session |
| Reality check | A reminder of elapsed time at a chosen interval | Immediately — it is the cheapest tool there is |
| Cooling-off period | A temporary lockout, typically a day to a few weeks | At the first warning sign |
| Self-exclusion | Long-term or permanent account closure | When breaks stop being enough |
All of them share one property: tightening a limit takes effect immediately, while loosening one requires a cooling period. That is by design — the mechanism exists to defeat a decision made in the moment. Step-by-step instructions are on the limits and self-exclusion page.
The difference worth knowing
In Poland the only licensed online casino is run by Totalizator Sportowy under the Total Casino brand, and as a licensed entity it maintains its own player protection tools and a national self-exclusion register. Self-exclusion at a licensed operator therefore works across the country rather than on one account. At a foreign operator no such national mechanism exists: limits and self-exclusion apply to that single platform only. So if you decide you need a break, it is worth blocking your own access by other means as well — see below.
Tools outside the gaming account
- A daily BLIK limit set in the banking app caps deposits at source.
- Gambling transaction blocking — some banks allow merchant category code 7995 to be blocked in card settings.
- Blocking software for gambling sites on computer and phone, configured with a password you do not know.
- Removing saved cards and stored logins from the browser, restoring a moment of hesitation.
All four are free, take effect immediately, and depend on no operator's goodwill.
Warning signs
Worth knowing before they are needed. Playing with money meant for something else. Chasing a loss immediately. Hiding sessions from people close to you. Rising stakes needed for the same level of feeling. Gambling as a way of handling stress or boredom. Lying about amounts. Borrowing in order to keep playing. One of these is a signal to set a limit; several at once is a signal to take a break and talk to somebody outside the game.
Age verification and minors
Only an adult may hold an account, and operators verify age against an identity document before the first payout. Underage gambling is prohibited without exception. In a household with children it is worth locking devices with a password, not saving login details in a browser, and enabling parental controls — access to a parent's account is the most common route by which minors reach these games.
Where to find help in Poland
If gambling stops being a choice, help is available and free. The organisations below are the ones to approach. We deliberately publish no phone numbers — numbers change, and a stale number at a moment of crisis is worse than none. Current contact details are on each organisation's own site.
- Krajowe Centrum Przeciwdzialania Uzaleznieniom (KCPU) — kcpu.gov.pl; the public body coordinating prevention and treatment of addictions, behavioural ones included.
- uzaleznieniabehawioralne.pl — an information portal run under KCPU programmes, with materials and a directory of help.
- Gamblers Anonymous (Anonimowi Hazardzisci) — a self-help fellowship holding free meetings in many cities and online.
- Addiction clinics within the public health service — therapy without a referral; a conversation with a family doctor is also a valid first step.
- Support for families — groups for relatives of people with a gambling problem run in parallel and matter just as much.
One step available today
Set a deposit limit before you need it. It takes a minute and is the only decision in this field made calmly. Every other one is made under pressure.
